Nintendo E3 2011 Press Conference Impressions

It’s a known fact that I’m a Nintendo fan. While I enjoy their games the most, I have no problem being critical if they do something I don’t like. Heading into the press conference, everyone had one question on their minds: what is Project Café? And while Nintendo did answer that question, they created much, MUCH more questions in its place.

The press conference opened with a Legend of Zelda orchestra playing a montage of Zelda themes. Overall, it was a great way to start the show. It was very entertaining and got everyone excited for the press conference. Turns out it wasn’t just for show as Shigeru Miyamoto announced that there would be a Zelda symphony tour in all regions of the world this fall. The tour is part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda series.

Speaking of Zelda, Miyamoto had much more to talk about. He talked about how Link’s Awaking DX is available on the 3DS eShop and Ocarina of Time 3D will be released for the 3DS soon. I won’t be buying Link’s Awaking, but I already have Ocarina of Time 3D pre-ordered. I’m glad that the graphics and the frame rate has improved as well as there being new content made for this version as well. I won’t buy every 3D remake for the 3DS, but Zelda deserves a replay. Miyamoto also announced that they will be releasing Legend of Zelda: Four Swords on the DSi and 3DS eShops for free. That is very surprising news. Along with a 3D version of Excitebike, it’s nice to see Nintendo provide free content to help raise interest for their eShops.

Miyamoto also talked about Skyward Sword for a little bit, saying that it would be one of the best Zeldas ever. The strange thing is, this was the only Wii title talked about during the press conference. It’s strange because they did have Wii games that they could have debut at the press conference, such as Kirby Wii and Mario Party 9, but didn’t announce until after press conference. It’s not like they didn’t have time either. Nintendo’s press conference was one of the shortest press conferences of E3. It’s very strange that they didn’t talk about their newest games for their current console. I guess they wanted to focus on the 3DS and Project Café more.

Speaking of 3DS, Nintendo talked about some games coming to the 3DS, most of which we knew about ahead of time. I’m just going to go through these quickly.

Star Fox 64 3D showed that it will use the camera to show your face during the multiplayer mode. I think it’s a cool little addition. Personally, I just want to play a Star Fox game that will wash away the foul taste of Star Fox Command for the DS.

A trailer for Super Mario 3D was shown for the first time. To me, it looks like a mix between Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario 64. It also looks like it still needs some more time for development. I’m betting we won’t be seeing this game until sometime after E3 2012/

Mario Kart 3D was shown and it’ll feature racing both in the air and underwater. In addition, you can customize you kart however you like. It looks like a Mario Kart game. It’ll sell.

Kid Icarus: Uprising showed a 3-on-3 multiplayer mode as well as at least two new AR cards that can be played with the game. What’s interesting is that during the new trailer, they showed a character who looked like he should be in a Final Fantasy game rather than Kid Icarus. I almost definitely will be getting the game, so I look forward to seeing what the story is like when it is released sometime this year.

Finally, Nintendo announced Luigi’s Mansion 2 for the 3DS. This has me excited because I thought I was the only one who wanted to see another Luigi’s Mansion game. Unless the game gets unanimously panned by critics, I will be getting this game.

For the last section of their press conference, Nintendo announced exactly what Project Café is, sorta. The big reveal was their newest console, the Wii U. The problem is, Nintendo never actually said it was a new console during the press conference, creating much confusion. Heck, if you blinked you probably missed that the new console was actually shown in one of the trailer videos. Instead, the main focus was on the new controller which is basically a traditional controller with a 6.2 inch touch screen in the middle. The touch screen is in HD (the console itself is 1080p) and can play your games without the need of the TV screen. In addition, the Wii remotes will be compatible with the Wii U as well.

Personally, I’m not completely sold on the Wii U. You can say I’m interested. There is definitely some real potential with the new controller, but I would like to see more details about the console itself. Nintendo has already said it won’t be coming out until their next fiscal year (which starts April 1st, 2012) so it seems clear that Nintendo will be announcing more details about the console itself in the upcoming months. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wii U isn’t released until holiday 2012, meaning they have E3 2012 to announce more details and show some official game footage.

The potential for the Wii U is there and it’s nice to see more third party support for the console. When it comes to learning more about the Wii U, this is a marathon, not a sprint. We’re just going to have to wait for our many questions to be answered.

Microsoft E3 2011 Press Conference Impressions

Once again, Microsoft’s press conference kicked off E3 (Konami doesn’t count). The entire show can be summed up as sequels, remakes, and Kinect. Overall, I felt like the show was an improvement over their show last year, but it still felt underwhelming.

The show started with the showing of Modern Warfare 3. Almost immediately, the Xbox controller disconnected causing an interruption to the demo. I’ve never been a Call of Duty player, but I can at least respect the series. Too me, the game looks nice and should please the fans of the series. It didn’t do anything to convince me to get the game, but it appears to be the well made game with that action movie feel. I think it’s obvious it’s going to sell well.

For me, the most interesting demo was the new Tomb Raider game. I know some people aren’t fans of the of it having a gritty reboot, but I think it looks good. It feels like a mix of elements from Uncharted and past Tomb Raider games. The demo wasn’t too long and showed a lot of promise. Consider me interested. There was one small problem I had with the demo though. During the demo, Laura left off a lot of moans whenever something bad happened (which was almost all the time). It made things sound like a type of game they couldn’t show at E3, if you catch my drift.

To no one’s surprise, Microsoft also showed off Kinect in great detail. As for Kinect only games, Microsoft has yet to convince me to buy a Kinect. Kinect Sports Season 2 still reminds me of Wii sports too much. Dance Central 2 looks good, but it looks too similar to the first right now. Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster actually looks like a really good family game for the Kinect. Sure, I doubt many “hardcore” gamers will play it, but there’s nothing wrong with a good family game being made. And on a side note, Disneyland Adventures looks like a waste of time.

Speaking of “hardcore” and Kinect, Microsoft did their best to display Kinect games and features for the “hardcore” audience. Kinect only Ryse, by Crytek, and Fable: The Journey, by Lionhead Studios, both look interesting but I need to see more before I can pass real judgment on these games. In addition, Microsoft also showed optional Kinect functions for Mass Effect 3 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Mass Effect 3 will include voice command for dialogue and combat. Judging from the demo, it looks good. If you have a Kinect, I’m sure it’ll add a new layer of interactivity. Ghost Recon showed off using Kinect to customize your weapons. It’s basically a fancy menu system. It looks like it’ll work well. However, I’m not a fan of using the Kinect for the actual shooting of the game. The positioning and motions required just look too problematic right now.

Gears of Wars 3 was shown. Ice-T announced that there would be a “whore” mode (was supposed to say “hoard” mode).

As far as the games are concerned, the last thing I want to touch upon is the Halo series. Around the midpoint of the conference, Microsoft announced Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Normally, I wouldn’t support the idea of remaking a game from last generation, but I like what they are going with this version. The new version will include online multiplayer and additional campaign content all in HD. This is how you do a remake. You add a bunch on new content for the new hardware.

Lastly, Microsoft ended their show by announcing Halo 4. In fact, they also announced Halo 5 and 6 by saying that Halo 4 would be the start of a new trilogy. This doesn’t surprise me at all, although we’ll have to see how Halo will do without Bungie at the helm.

So overall, I was underwhelmed by Microsoft. None of their games shown were new IPs and time was spent mostly to show off the Kinect with varying success in gaining interest. Heck, the two Halo games weren’t even a surprise since Microsoft’s website spoiled the surprise before the press conference started. At the end of the day, I really wanted to see something new and interesting, and I just didn’t get that.

Nintendo E3 Press Conference First Impressions

Wow. Just wow. Where do I begin?

Two years ago, Nintendo’s E3 press conference left me very disappointed with last year’s only being somewhat better. This year’s press conference, however, made me very excited and left me begging for more. I have a lot of games that I still have to beat and I need to get through them a.s.a.p. by the time holiday season comes around.

The press conference started off with a bang with Nintendo finally revealing the new Zelda game, Zelda: Skyward Sword. The game looks really good. I really like the art direction for the game. It looks like a blend between Twilight Princess and Wind Waker to create a colorful yet realistic world.

XBox 360 | Playstation 3 | Nintendo Wii

Unfortunately, there were technical difficulties during the demo, but other sites that got to play the demo at E3 confirmed that the motion controls do work just fine. Personally, I’m looking forward to the new control scheme and seeing how things play out in the story this time around. Also, you get to kill bats with a whip. Simon Belmont would be proud. Zelda: Skyward Sword isn’t set to come out until 2011. That’s good because I’ve yet to beat Twilight Princess.

After Zelda there were a few games I didn’t care about and a section which was basically Nintendo telling the haters, “We’re doing a lot better than you think we are, suckers!” We then got to see Mario Sports Mix which includes DODGE BALL! I think I’ll get that game just so I can throw a Bomb-omb into Princess Daisy’s face. There were plenty of games shown that got people very excited. For the sake of length, I’m going to go through some of them quickly.

Epic Mickey – I’m really looking forward to this game. Hopefully, the create/erase system will be as good as they say it will be.

Golden Sun – I’ve never played the series before, but I’m sure fans will enjoy it.

GoldenEye 007 Remake – Honestly, I’m very surprised this is being made. I look forward to see just how they are going about making the game without ruining it for long time fans.

Metroid: Other M – Is it August 31st yet? No? Crap.

Donkey Kong Country Returns – The crowd was really excited to see this game announced. I really like the look of the game and fully plan on getting it when it comes out. It’s also nice to see that the game actually has Donkey Kong as a playable character, unlike Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3.

All those games look like they are going to be great, but there were two games that really got me excited. First was a game that I have been waiting for a long time. I’m a huge fan of the Kirby series and I’ve been annoyed that there hasn’t been a console game for him since the Nintendo 64 (Air Ride does NOT count). Honestly, I had given up on seeing a Kirby game outside of portable systems, but boy was I given a nice surprise when I saw this:

This looks amazing. Plain and simple, it looks amazing. This game is the perfect example of how a game doesn’t need super realistic graphics in order to look good. The art direction looks so bright and well designed that you can tell exactly what the designers are going for. I honestly wish that there were more developers that wouldn’t always try to create games that had ultra realistic looks and instead try to create a game that had its own unique style. To top it off, the game play simply looks fun. It appears there will be a ton of secretes to explore as you play through the game. I fully intend on buying this game as soon as it comes out.

And that brings us to the main attraction of the press conference, the Nintendo 3DS. Reggie Fils-Amie stressed that they wanted to remove the annoying glasses that come with 3d. The system itself looks pretty cool with its new analog slider and 3d camera, but everyone had one question in mind: does it work? The bad news is that they can’t really show off the 3d unless you are holding it. The good news is that according to Mark from Classic Game Room, it does work.

What’s also really interesting is selection of games in development for the 3DS. In addition to plenty of third party support including Resident Evil, Professor Layton, and Metal Gear Solid, there will also be 3d remakes of Nintendo classics including Animal Crossing, Star Fox 64, and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. First off, I’ll happily play a portable Star Fox game that isn’t Command. At least this one won’t suck. Second of all, Ocarina of Time in 3d with enhanced graphics sound like something a lot of people, including myself will be more than willing to play. All these games for the 3DS look and sound really awesome, but there was one game announced as a launch title that shocked me. It was rumored to be in production years ago, but the rumors died down. The last time a game in this series was released was in 1991. But after twenty years, we finally got this:

Well, it’s about damn time. My goodness that looks amazing. I want to remind you that this is not a Wii game. This is a 3DS game. If the 3DS launch title can look that good, I can only imagine what later games will look like. The game play looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun as well. It’s official: I’m getting a Nintendo 3DS. Congrats, Nintendo. You made a believer out of me.

This press conference was awesome. Nintendo finally delivers with a wide selection of games and announcement that really got people excited. I need to earn some more money. I’m going to be buying a lot of Nintendo products.

Quick thoughts about Day one:

-EA looked awesome.

-Ubisoft managed to hold a press conference even worse than they did last year.

-Microsoft’s Kinect look’s interesting, but they need more games that don’t remind me of games I can find on the Wii.

Speaking of the Wii, that brings me to the point of this article: Nintendo. Anyone who knows me knows that I grew up with Nintendo and will always be a fan of them until the day I die. This year’s E3 has a lot of mysteries regarding the big N and I’m here to predict just what they are going to reveal at their press conference tomorrow. Here’s the likely and the long shot predictions for what I think and want to see from Nintendo at E3.

-New Zelda game will finally be shown. It will be awesome.

-Metriod: Other M will be shown and demoed. It will be like Ninja Gaiden in space but without the bouncy boobs and terrible camera.

-We will get to see the Nintendo 3DS. The size will be between a DS lite and DSi XL. The 3D effect will probably not be what we are expecting.

-Another new Mario game will be announced. It will likely to be a spinoff game like Mario Party or Mario Tennis.

-Wii remote with motion plus built in will be shown.

-Animal Crossing for the 3DS will be shown. I still need to start playing the DS version I own.

-Kid Icarus for Wii will finally be announced. Unfortunately it will not be a difficult as the NES or the Game Boy versions.

-Star Tropics 3 will be announced. Hey, a guy can dream can’t he?

-Conduit 2 will be demoed. Motion plus will be a great improvement.

-The vitality sensor will be shown and it will be used for more than just determining if you’re alive or not.

-The balance board will somehow be shown in some way. I just don’t know how.

-A new, original IP will be announced. C’mon Nintendo, it’ll be nice to see something new.

-People will notice the irony that, of the big three, Nintendo’s press conference will devote the least amount of time to casual games.

So there are my thoughts about what I think is going to happen tomorrow. Do you have any predictions? Let me know what you think.

Inuyasha: The Final Act Episode One Impressions

Well, I finally got around to watching Inuyasha: The Final Act on hulu, and I originally planned on talking about the first four episodes, but I decided to just talk about the first since A LOT happened. What’s really going to be hard is keeping this spoiler free, but I’ll do my best.

Episode One: Naraku’s Heart

The very first thing we see is, of course, the opening. The first opening is titled “Kimi ga inai mirai” and is performed by Do As Infinity, who have done two of the ending songs for the first Inuyasha series. It’s an okay song. The video portion is a typical montage of characters with some cool moves thrown in. It’s a little above the standard for anime openings, except for the scene of Shippo and Jaken playing Red Light, Green Light (seriously).

The end theme is titled “With You” and is performed by AAA and it is awesome. The art style of the video supports an already strong song making the ending sequence a nice desert to the episode’s main story entrée.

Watching the show, I noticed that the animation looks a lot better. All the characters and scenery look sharp and well detailed.

One thing this episode reminded me of is that there are A Lot of characters in the Inuyasha universe. And in this episode, we see all the main characters as well as most of the supporting characters. Here’s a complete list of everybody in episode one:

• Naraku
• Kagura
• Kanna
• Moryomaru
• Hakudoshi
• Kohaku
• Koga
• Koga’s two followers (who are pointless by the way)

• Kagome’s Mother

• Kagome’s Grandfather
• Kagome’s three friends

That’s a lot of people to cover.

Most of the people are given about a minute of screen time and really are only there to show that they’re still around and that they have been continuing their quests. The good news is that you will have one less person to follow after this episode because one of the people on the list dies in the episode. Quite frankly, I found this to be quite surprising, but in a good way, because it was enjoyable.

Despite the segments of other people, the main story of the episode was quite good and actually didn’t end on a cliffhanger (one of my complaints with the first series). The animation overall has improved dramatically, which makes the show look that much better. The music during the episode is the same as the first series, so it brings an extra sense on familiarity when watching the episode.

The only thing I didn’t enjoy with this episode was some the voice acting. This may be because I’m more familiar with the dub, but Viz’s English voices for some characters just sound as a stronger suppot to their character’s personality. This is especially true for Inuyasha himself. Richard Ian Cox does a great job making InuYahsa sound like this stubborn badass that I can really get behind. Kappei Yamaguchi makes him sound high pitched and, quite frankly, a little annoying and wimpy.

Despite my small criticism, it was a great way to start the series and I look forward to see how the story finally ends. Now if you excuse me, I’m going to get back to watching some more Inuyasha.

First is the Slide Climb, followed by the Outer C Curve and the Grate Climb. After the Vertical Cross, all that awaits is the Pole Cross and the Ring Cross followed by the goal.

In the first level, the four players have to climb the small slide, cross the stiff bridge, travel down the swirl, squeeze through the tube, cross the shaky bridge, traverse the s curve bars, cross the small rings, and then finally ascend the pole. Any falters or time running out will result in a loss in a life. Zero lives equal a game over.
